the orange press was founded in 1972 to produce and distribute a Vietnamese folk-tale I'd translated to raise funds for the anti-war effort. At the time it seemed ridiculous to publish through the usual channels: I'd be raising more money for bombs than for bandages to fix the damage caused by the bombs in the first place. Next I published Verse Gazette, a collection of poetry posters by various artists which included the first posters of subway graffiti and the first free poetry listings in New York City. The book and the posters were both sold on a pay-as-you can basis. Thirty years later I'm still learning: that change (even visual change) happens also at the point of consumption; that the cycle of commodification that feeds a market that feeds a demand for production can be broken; and that one can produce as much as is needed, as it's needed. Thirty years later, technology has started to catch up with these lessons. A l'époque il me semblait ridicule de publier chez un grand éditeur : puisque les profits payaient pour les bombes à quoi bon récolter l'argent pour réparer les dégâts dûs à ces mêmes bombes? Ensuite j'ai édité «Verse Gazette», une collection de posters de poésie par plusieurs artistes, y compris les tout premiers posters de graffiti à New York. Le livre et les posters se vendaient sans prix réglé ; Trente ans plus tard j'en suis encore là : changer la societé en commençant par la consommation; contrecarrer le cercle vicieux de la commodification qui pousse le marché qui pousse la demande qui pousse la production; produire ce dont on a besoin, quand on en a besoin. Trente ans plus tard, la technologie commence a rattraper la théorie.
